The beginning of any journey is always hard because the unknown usually scares us. But small changes in our everyday lives can bring tremendous benefits and improvement in our well-being. Creating habits can increase our efficiency and help us achieve our goals easily. In this paper, I will explore how to create a habit, what it means to have a habit-forming environment, and share my strategies for creating positive habits.
Steps for Creating a Habit
The first step to developing a habit is understanding how it works. According to the concept of habit formation called "Habit Loop", there are three stages – a cue, behavior, and reward. The understanding of this mechanism allows us to build strategies aimed at replacing unproductive habits with healthy ones. For example, if one tends to eat when experiencing stress, a more appropriate alternative would be exercising or meditating.
Setting goals is another important step towards changing one’s habits. As Charles Duhigg explains in his book "The Power of Habit", a person should set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals which will act as a compass for us in terms of development of new habits. For example, instead of just saying that you will "work out more", set specific goals such as "I will work out for 30 min each day in the coming 2 weeks". It will significantly contribute to reaching goals and establishing positive habits.
Psychology of Habit
Understanding the psychology behind habits and why they are formed is a powerful tool for changing them. As I mentioned above, "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg provides a lot of information on the topic. Habits are a product of one’s emotional and psychological state, and understanding it is a great starting point. It is necessary to determine the reasons for your current behavior and try replacing them with something positive.
For example, if a person overeats due to some kind of emotional distress, he or she should determine its roots and find ways to cope with it without eating. Maybe a person needs a break or some sort of entertainment? By identifying one’s feelings in this situation, one can find the ways to manage them without having negative consequences in the future.
Habit-Forming Environment
Environment is a crucial factor that affects our behavior in different aspects of our lives. Therefore, by creating a proper atmosphere around ourselves, we can make our lives easier in the process of developing habits. Let’s take the example of exercising, for instance. If one wishes to develop a habit of working out regularly, they should create an environment that would favor such a change. First of all, a person needs to prepare themselves psychologically and find an appropriate place for training. It can be a personal gym, a bike, or maybe a local park?
Another critical aspect to consider is getting rid of all possible distractions. Digital minimalism is a great tool for people who wish to live with fewer distractions. People should limit their time spent on the Internet and reduce the number of notifications that can prevent them from focusing on something productive and useful.
Strategies for Changing Habits
Now that I have provided an insight into psychology of habits and discussed how to create an environment suitable for developing them, let me describe some strategies that I found helpful for myself. First of all, I think that it is essential to apply the 4-Day Rule, as stated by James Clear. According to it, it is crucial to stick to one’s goal and engage in it continuously for 4 days. After this period, one should get enough confidence to continue and create a momentum.
Another effective approach is tracking your achievements. A habit tracker is a useful tool which helps in analyzing one’s progress, finding patterns, and maintaining self-motivation. Moreover, various habit-forming applications are available on the web, and a person can choose the one that is most convenient for him/her.
Overcoming Challenges and Maintaining Motivation
Changing habits can be very difficult sometimes. It requires patience and determination since the result usually comes after weeks or even months. It is important not to give up and maintain motivation in the process of creating habits. Celebration of even little victories in this matter is a good way of achieving that.
An important part of staying committed is creating an accountability system for yourself. People should share their plans with someone close, join support groups, and hire a coach in case it is needed. Someone’s help will motivate them to follow through and not fail.
Conclusion
All in all, changing habits requires a lot of work, effort, and time but yields great benefits in the long run. With understanding of psychology and creating a favorable environment, a person can succeed in developing healthy habits and establish a positive lifestyle.
